open up celebrates 20-year anniversary

Zurich agency open up can look back on a 20-year journey through time and the world of communications. The owner-managed company, with a staff of 14, advises organisations on all matters related to communications, with the emphasis on long-term content strategy. In September, open up celebrated its anniversary with clients, partners and friends.

The basis of the agency’s work is – and always has been – creating and preparing journalistic content. While 20 years ago the focus was on copywriting services and media relations, these days the backbone of convincing corporate communications is providing holistic advice regardless of the channel: earned, owned or shared media.

Consistency and openness

The agency, led by partners Melanie Schneider and Kilian Borter, currently has around 60 clients on its books on an annual mandate or project basis. Open by name, open by nature: the agency has always fostered the basic attitude that gives it its name. “Since our establishment we’ve placed great emphasis on openness in our day-to-day consulting work,” explains agency founder Kilian Borter. Consistency is also a key value underlying the business. “We want to be able to assure our clients, team and partner agencies the consistency required to collaborate on the basis of trust,” says Melanie Schneider, who has co-owned the agency for the last ten years.

The team, which operates in groups of two, combines experience in a wide range of industries and PR disciplines, The agency’s accounts include companies in financial services and insurance, ICT and energy, transport and tourism, construction, healthcare and educations, as well as NGOs and foundations. Depending on the nature of the account, open up can draw on the specialist knowledge of a network of partner agencies built up over the years. Open up is also a member of the international PRN Network, an independent network of owner-managed public relations agencies.

Same part of the city, new premises

In September open up held its anniversary celebration with over 100 clients and partners under the banner “Time and World Travel”, for the first time at the new agency premises and on the roof terrace at Helvetiaplatz in Zurich. The agency moved into these new premises on Molkenstrasse, which used to house the post office counters, two years ago.

From two-man PR operation to communications agency

Over the course of two decades the PR operation founded in 2001 by Kilian Borter and Urs Thaler has grown into a medium-sized agency with prestigious clients and a focused portfolio covering all the PR disciplines, from strategic communications consulting and brand positioning to creative storytelling in media relations and content creation.
